Reference · Needles
Embroidery needle sizes affect thread breaks, skipped stitches, fabric damage, and stitch quality. Wrong size = problems. Right size = smooth stitching. This guide covers size 11, 14, 16, 18 needles, when to use each, and how to match needle to fabric and thread.

Pick the right needle
Size 14 (90 European) is the most versatile embroidery needle. Works for typical 40wt thread on standard fabrics (cotton, polyester, polos, t-shirts). Stock plenty.
Light fabrics (silk, organza), fine thread (60wt), or small detailed designs need size 11 (75 European). Finer needle = cleaner small stitches.
Denim, canvas, leather, or heavy thread (30wt) needs size 16 (100 European). Stronger needle pierces tough materials without bending.
Beyond size: ballpoint for knits, sharp for woven, leather for leather/vinyl, metallic for metallic threads. Size alone isn't enough — type matters too.

Embroidery needle sizes — common questions
Default to size 14 — works for most fabrics and 40wt thread. Size 11 for fine fabrics/thread. Size 16-18 for heavy fabrics. Match needle TYPE to fabric: sharp for woven, ballpoint for knits, leather for leather.
Yes — embroidery needles have a larger eye (for embroidery thread), a different scarf shape, and a sharper point optimized for high-speed embroidery. Regular sewing needles cause thread breaks and skipped stitches in embroidery.
On knits — t-shirts, jersey, sweatshirts, performance fabrics. The rounded tip pushes between knit fibers instead of cutting through them, preventing holes and damage.
Every 8-12 hours of stitching, or after a thread break, or whenever you suspect needle issues. Needles dull quickly under embroidery's high-speed cycle.
Smaller numbers = finer needles. Size 11 (75 European): for light fabrics and fine thread. Size 14 (90 European): standard, for most embroidery. Size 16 (100 European): for heavy fabrics and thread.
