How to Embroider on Terry / Towels

Terry cloth (bath towels, washcloths, hand towels) is a top-3 embroidery surface for gift items but has a unique challenge: the loop pile absorbs stitches. Without proper topping film, embroidery on terry looks sunken and disappointing. This guide covers the technique that works.

Terry embroidery setup

01

Use water-soluble topping film

This is the critical step. Water-soluble topping (Sulky Solvy, Vilene WS) goes on TOP of the terry before stitching. It holds the loops down so stitches sit on the surface instead of sinking between loops.

02

Add cut-away medium below

Standard cut-away medium stabilizer under the terry, like normal. Cut-away stays in to support the embroidery through wash. Tear-away does not work on terry (the loops grab the fibers).

03

Stitch normally, then rinse

Stitch the design as usual. After stitching, soak the terry in warm water 5-10 minutes — the topping film dissolves completely. Rinse, pat dry, and the embroidery is clean.

04

Use 40wt polyester thread + size 14 needle

Standard 40wt poly + size 14 sharp embroidery needle works for terry. Polyester handles repeated wash. Avoid rayon (fades).

Why terry is tricky

Terry-specific challenges

Without proper setup, terry embroidery looks bad:

  • Stitch sinkage: loops absorb stitches; without topping film, design is mostly invisible
  • Loop separation: loops pull apart along stitch lines without topping
  • Bulky surface: terry fibers can wrap around needle, causing breaks
  • Color show-through: bobbin thread visible if loops fluff up
  • Shrinkage: terry shrinks 10% first wash — pre-shrink before embroidering

Best terry projects

What terry works for

Common terry embroidery:

  • Bath towels — name + decorative motif (5-7 inch)
  • Hand towels — small monogram (3-4 inch)
  • Washcloths — initial monogram (2-3 inch)
  • Robes — chest pocket monogram
  • Avoid: full-cover designs (terry distorts), photo realism (loops dissolve detail)

How to embroider on terry / towels — common questions

Do I really need water-soluble topping for towels?

Yes — without topping film, embroidery on terry looks sunken and patchy because the loops absorb stitches. Topping film holds the loops down during stitching, creating a flat surface for clean embroidery.

What stabilizer below the terry?

Cut-away medium (2.5oz). It supports stitches through repeated wash. Tear-away does not work on terry — the loops grab fibers and create lint.

How do I remove water-soluble topping?

Soak the embroidered terry in warm water for 5-10 minutes. The topping dissolves completely. Rinse with clean water to remove any residue, then pat dry.

Can I embroider on cheap discount towels?

Yes — but lower thread count terry frays easier. For gift-quality embroidery, use mid-tier terry (300-500 GSM). The cheapest towels work for personal use but embroidery edges fray faster.

Should I pre-shrink towels?

Yes — terry shrinks 10% in first wash. Pre-wash and dry the towel before embroidering. Stitching un-pre-shrunk terry leads to puckered embroidery after the first wash.
