How to Embroider on Fleece

Fleece (sweatshirt fronts, fleece blankets, jacket linings) is a soft pile fabric that, like terry, absorbs stitches without proper preparation. This guide covers the setup that lets embroidery sit clean on top of fleece.

Fleece embroidery setup

01

Use water-soluble topping film

Same approach as terry. Topping film (Sulky Solvy, Vilene WS) goes on top of the fleece before stitching. Holds the pile down so stitches sit on the surface.

02

Add cut-away medium below

Cut-away medium (2.5oz) under the fleece, like for typical knit work. Stays in for wash. Tear-away does not work on fleece (fibers grab into stabilizer).

03

Use ballpoint needle on fleece

Ballpoint embroidery needle size 14 — pushes between pile fibers rather than cutting them. Sharp needle damages fleece pile.

04

Stitch, soak, dry

Stitch design normally. Soak finished item in warm water to dissolve topping. Pat dry, fluff the pile gently if matted.

Fleece-specific issues

Without proper setup

What goes wrong on fleece:

  • Stitch sinkage: pile absorbs design; appears patchy
  • Pile direction: stitches can bend the pile, creating visible direction
  • Static cling: fleece grabs onto sticky stabilizers
  • Lint: fleece sheds fibers into machine; clean lint trap frequently
  • Wash-related shrinkage: some fleece shrinks 5%; pre-shrink first

What fleece works for

Common fleece embroidery:

  • Sweatshirts (fleece-back) — chest logo or back design
  • Fleece blankets — large designs (8-12 inch)
  • Jacket linings — small designs
  • Pajama tops — small chest logo
  • Avoid: very dense designs (fleece distorts under heavy stitching)

How to embroider on fleece — common questions

Do I need topping film for fleece?

Yes — same as terry. Without topping film, embroidery on fleece sinks into the pile and looks patchy. Topping film holds the pile down during stitching.

Ballpoint or sharp needle on fleece?

Ballpoint. Fleece pile gets damaged by sharp needle tips. Ballpoint pushes between pile fibers without cutting them.

Can I embroider on jacket lining fleece?

Yes — fleece linings work for embroidery. Use 40wt thread and a small design (size of personal name or logo). Cut-away stabilizer between the lining and outer shell of the jacket.

Do I need to pre-wash fleece?

Yes — fleece shrinks 5% in first wash. Pre-wash and dry the item before embroidering to prevent post-wash puckering.

Why does fleece keep shedding into my machine?

Fleece sheds lint. Clean the lint trap, bobbin case, and feed dogs every few hours of fleece embroidery. Excessive lint causes thread breaks and tension issues.
